This piece was created in collaboration with fellow artist Michael Wilson of Iowa. Michael is a self-taught representational artist working in oil, charcoal, and pencil and he created this painting in oil. After painting, I stitched directly into the canvas, over the painting to create the flowers. The animal “bubbles” were stitched onto black aida, in cross stitch using embroidery thread. Each “bubble” has been sealed.
This is one in a series of two pieces. Each pieces in this diptych focuses on the theme of Masquerade. Each flower, animal and color chosen was researched to be an authentic part of Masquerade ceremony.
It is an original piece of art that explores the celebration of anonymity, mystery and social freedom, historically allowing people to temporarily step outside their normal daily roles, class ranks, and identities through the use of masks.
It comes ready to hang with a wire on back.
