The title, "Frug" refers to a popular 1960s dance craze. In 1966, Bob Fosse created choreography for a Broadway musical and the 1969 film “Sweet Charity” based on this dance. The routine mocked the coldness, emotional detachment, boredom, and strict social codes of the ultra-wealthy and elite of the time, which is part of what I attempted to evoke with this work.
It also speaks about nostalgia, memory the ways these things change over time in our culture, especially as they relate to women.
This paper collage is made from vintage and current black and white magazine images of women, text, notebook paper and embroidery thread. The use of notebook paper in my collage work has become a trademark for me. The embroidery is stitched directly into the notebook paper.
It comes finished in blue, solid wood frame that matches the lines of the notebook paper. The frame has shatterproof plexiglass protecting the work.
