The Magic of Spray Paint

I love paint! All kinds of paint. It’s a magical material because it’s quick, affordable, easy to use and makes a huge impact in a short amount of time. If you make a mistake, or change your mind, just paint over it again. There are so many types of paints now too that can also be used on almost any surface.

Another love of mine is vintage houseware items. One afternoon, at a garage sale, I found a piece that I had never seen before and had to have. It is a dispenser that hangs on the wall in a kitchen and holds a roll of foil, a roll of wax paper and a roll of paper towels. Each section has a serrated edge. to aid in cleanly tearing off the amount you need.I love the design and how functional it is!

What I didn’t love was that it was brown, but knew I could paint it. This was before we purchased our home, so I held onto it. The home we ended up purchasing is a midcentury ranch, so this piece was the perfect style and fit well with the kitchen. When we moved in we hung it as it was and used it that way for six years, always with the intention to paint it.

I purchased paint for this project months ago. Finally, this turned out to be the weekend for a quick make over! This piece is made of aluminum and had a matte finish. I purchased a spray paint that is designed for painting metal and has a strong adhesion.

I used this Rust-oleum paint. I like this brand and this line because it works well and has great color choices.

I started by cleaning the dispenser thoroughly, but did not sand it or do other prep to the finish since it wasn’t glossy. There are labels running down one side that I wanted to keep so I covered them with masking tape before painting. I also put some paper in the bottom, paper towel dispenser because I didn’t want to paint the inside.

This project probably took me an hour total, and I love how it turned out. It’s a cute, bright spot in our kitchen now that coordinates much better than the brown did.

Sometimes these simple projects take the longest to complete but are the most rewarding. Maybe this short post will inspire you to tackle a paint project you’ve been putting off. Thanks for following along!
