Window Boxes Project
I love a good window box on the right house. Recently, I had the opportunity to complete a quick and satisfying flower window box project and I’m excited to share it with you!
Last year my brother and his family moved into a new home. The neighborhood is perfect, and the house fits their needs, but it’s one of those neighborhoods where all of the houses look exactly the same. I helped them with the interior, but we also wanted to make the outside unique and beautiful
The plan for the outside was:
Remove vinyl shutters
Plant a couple of bushes
Paint on the front door
A new, hefty and unexpected door knocker
New screen door
New lighting
New house numbers
And, window boxes!
We got through most of this list pretty quickly last summer, but waited to tackle the window boxes until this summer.
Here is what the home looked like when they bought it. One of the shutters had already fallen off. I thought it looked odd to only have the shutters on the two smallest windows. Also, every house in the neighborhood has these same shutters, and they are non-functioning.
We knew that we wanted black accents on the exterior, and we purchased these window boxes from Amazon.

Like most people, my brother lives a busy life with family and work. He and his wife wanted something easy, that they did not have to maintain all of the time. They also like the look of plants but do not have a green thumb. We decided to go with artificial plants for these reasons. Artificial plants have improved so much over the years and the quality and look you can get is really fantastic! I chose to go with mostly green plants of different colors, textures and heights. This way, it will not be so obvious during the changing seasons that they are artificial.
I started by putting green florist foam into the boxes. There are two kinds of florist foam, one for real plants and one for artificial. The one made for real plants is meant to absorb water, so you want to avoid that for this type of project.
Here are some close up shots of some of the plants I used. We got all of the plants at Michaels craft store.
I arranged my plants ahead of time, and had a rough plan of how I wanted the boxes to look. This made it go much quicker and easier, especially since you really can’t tell how it looks until you stand at a distance.
I made the large window box slightly different from the two smaller ones. The two smaller ones are the same as each other. Once my foam was in place, I started sticking the plants in and it was as easy as that!

This was such a satisfying project! It only took one afternoon and made a huge impact. We received a lot of positive comments and reactions from the neighbors too.

After I was done, I thought that it still felt like these window boxes were missing something or that they could be more full. I went back a few weeks later and added some more plants, along with some weeping type branches. I loved the look, but my brother and sister-in-law did not like the weeping branches.
