My In-Home Studio

Everyday I feel grateful and lucky to have a home that we love and to have an in-home studio. This has been especially true over the last year and a half as I have transitioned Sandrilene to becoming my full time job and mainly working from home. Over the years, I have had studio space that I rented in other buildings. Being around other creative minds and people who are also running small businesses was wonderful, but the advantages of an in-home studio end up being a better fit for me. It is a luxury to be able to work anytime of the day or night that fits my life.

Having a space where I can stop in the middle of a project, leave it as is, and close the door is so convenient. My studio is in one of our bedrooms and it also serves as our guest room, the room where we keep our dog’s kennel and where I mediate and practice yoga. The space is not large, but I try to make use of every square inch. Unless we are having a guest, it is always in a state of working/ organized mess. I like to have multiple projects going on at all times.

Here are some pictures of how my studio typically looks.

Green has always been my favorite color, so I decided to coat the walls with a bright, cheerful version. Most of the furniture pieces serve double duty. The loveseat pulls out to a bed and I used a rolling cart next to it that serves as storage and a side table. The desk also serves as my sewing table. The side table and ottoman by the chair also open for storage. I have hooks on the sides of the metal shelves to hang bags, hoops and other materials from.

Since I do not need to hang a lot of clothes in this room, the closet has shelving and drawers. There are still rods on both sides where I store some of my special occasion vintage pieces and dresses. There are baskets on almost every shelf and they are filled with fabric. My fabric is organized by color. It doesn’t look especially organized but I feel like it is!

I started doing circular woven wall hangings a few years ago, and as my yarn collection has grown I have grown out of storage space to keep my materials in. I ended up piling all of the yarn in a few different baskets. The baskets were taking up valuable floor space and I was not able to see what I have. I told my wonderful husband what I was envisioning for some wall hung yarn storage boxes and over the weekend he built them for me. I am so thrilled with how they turned out.

Here are the boxes before I filled them. We used sanded, unfinished plywood to make them and I really like the natural look.

We hung it low enough so that I could still reach the yarn, but I love that I am also able to place large yarn balls on top!

They only come out from the wall 8 inches so it does not feel too intrusive while still being deep enough to store a lot of yarn.

Here is the space as it functions everyday with the dog kennel and loveseat.

I thought this new, added storage was a great opportunity to share my studio with my readers! Could you be productive in a space like this or would it make you crazy? Let me know in the comments!
